Ella Blackburn has been playing piano for more than 20 years, completing both her Bachelor of Music (2011) and Master of Music (2016) at the University of Melbourne. Her love of piano extends to a range of styles, but she has a particular passion for the French impressionist music of composers such as Ravel, Debussy and Satie.
In 2014 she co-founded the Asteria Duo with flautist Erin Kersing. Asteria specialises in performance of 20th Century French works and contemporary works, including premiering commissions by early-career Australian composers.
Ella performs regularly as a soloist at weddings, events, and corporate functions; recent highlights include being invited to perform at Government House, the Melbourne Recital Centre, Crown Casino, and the Langham Hotel. In 2017 she was invited to perform live on Channel Nine as part of the Talkin’ Bout Your Generation quiz show, and she currently holds a regular residency at Melbourne’s RACV Club. Ella is also an in demand accompanist for concerts, auditions, student exams, and choirs, such as Sing Australia and The Choir of Hard Knocks.
Ella is a professional and well presented performer, able to bring a classy atmosphere to any event. for any event. She has an extensive repertoire list, ranging from classical music and jazz standards to pop/contemporary songs, which she readily tailors to her clients' requests. Ella is also a passionate teacher, with an extensive roster of private students. She tailors lessons to the individual, with a focus on forming strong technique, note reading, and aural skills, whilst also fostering creativity and musicality. She connects with students easily to create a comfortable and inspiring learning environment, nurturing students to express their musical curiosity and creativity and build confidence in their musical abilities. Ella teaches from her home studio in South Preston, in Melbourne's inner North.
